Indications:
Atopica capsule is a selective immunomodulator. It is used for the
treatment of atopic dermatitis in dogs.
Availability:
Atopica capsule is a prescription medication available as oral soft
capsules packaged in blister packs.
How
to use Atopica:
Cyclosporine capsule is FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine
for dogs at least 6 months of age and at least 4.5 lbs. The usual
dose is 2.5mg/pound. Dogs 4.5-6.5lbs give 1 x 10mg capsule, 6.6-8.5lbs
give 2 x 10mg capsules, 8.6-17.5lbs give 1 x 25mg capsule, 17.6-32.9lbs
give 1 x 50mg capsule, 33-63.7lbs give 1 x 100mg capsule, 63.8-78.9lbs
give 1 x 100mg and 1 x 50mg capsules and for dogs 79-120lbs give
2 x 100mg capsules. The medication should be given 2 hours before
or after feeding. Atopica is initially given once a day until satisfactory
improvement is seen, usually 4 to 8 weeks. The medication can then
be given every other day until the clinical signs of atopic dermatitis
are satisfactorily controlled, then the medication can be given
every 3 to 4 days.
What
are the side effects of Atopica:
Side effects of Atopical capsule include GI disturbances
such as vomiting, soft stool or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually
mild and transient. Other side effects that occur very rarely include,
muscle cramps, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, gingival hypertrophy
and change of hair coat.
